Reviews of the new forthcoming Lockdown book.
"Lockdown offers a unique and powerful insight into an extraordinary period in our history. These images - poignant funny wistful & defiant - perfectly capture the pain of enforced separation, the longing for human contact, and the overwhelming desire to communicate. And through them all, even as people’s lives are put on hold, as if in suspended animation, the human spirit shines bright, offering hope and inspiration at a time of fear and uncertainty."
Caroline Lucas M.P.
For many years photographer JJ Waller has been wandering the streets of Brighton & Hove – as well as more than a handful of other towns and cities – looking to record moments in time that embody a spirit of place.
But what does a street photographer do, when hardly anyone is out on the streets? JJ Waller’s Lockdown Portraits of This Time became the answer.
In this book JJ achieves a unique documentation in which the confining structure of people’s windows become a frame within a frame for his enquiring lens. The resulting images, interwoven with poignant quotes, are testament to the range of emotions and moods provoked by the Covid 19 crisis.
Expertly edited by Martin Parr, this book will forever serve as a documentary reminder of how humanity stayed very human during the Lockdown times of 2020.
People will be asking for years to come: what did you do during lockdown? JJ Waller, almost uniquely, will be able to respond - ‘I photographed it.’
